As you look ahead to spring baseball and summer vacation plans, there is one thing worth keeping in mind: your furnace.

It may seem odd while you are thinking about beaches and sunshine, but late in the heating season is a good time to deal with furnace problems. These issues can sneak up on you and cause bigger trouble if they are left alone.

Consider scheduling a furnace repair if you notice any of the following issues:

Clogged Air Filters

Clogged or dirty air filters are one of the most common late-season issues homeowners run into. All winter, your furnace pulls air from your home, heats it and sends it back through the ducts.

Over time, dust, pollen and other particles build up on the filter. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes the furnace work harder and can lead to overheating and other component problems that require a more extensive repair.

Loose Wiring

The vibration of the blower and other moving parts can gradually loosen electrical connections. When a connection becomes too loose, it can cause the furnace to shut off or stop working altogether. This is one of the things a technician checks during routine maintenance.

Broken Thermostat

Another common late-season repair is a broken or faulty thermostat. Thermostats can fail for several reasons, including:

• Outdated technology

• Wear from heavy use

• Manufacturer defects

• Overheating

Fortunately, fixing or replacing a thermostat is usually a relatively simple job.

Peculiar Noises

However minor a sound may seem, it is worth contacting a furnace technician if you hear noises that are out of the ordinary. Sounds to pay attention to include banging, hissing, grinding or repeated clicking.

Short-Cycling

Short-cycling happens when the furnace shuts off and quickly turns back on, completing only part of a heating cycle. Causes range from a dirty filter or faulty sensor to a furnace that is too large for the home. A technician should diagnose the cause first. If an oversized furnace is the problem, a correctly sized replacement based on a load calculation is the long-term fix.
